Palacios Perspectives 09.19.2025

From Wall Street to Main Street

Highlights from the past week

Market / Macro Economic Summary The US stock market had a very strong week, with all three major indexes closing at or near all-time highs. The S&P 500 rose by 1.2%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 1.0%, and the Nasdaq Composite had the most significant increase, climbing 2.2%. This rally was largely driven by the Federal Reserve’s Wednesday decision to cut interest rates for the first time this year, a move that boosted investor confidence and made borrowing cheaper.  Hopefully the note that I sent early in the day on Wednesday helped to set expectations and explain things. Additionally, a positive retail sales report and a decline in jobless claims eased concerns about the economy, further fueling the market’s bullish sentiment. We still remain confident that there are many factors that point to the markets remaining in a positive trend. Company Specific / Micro Economic Summary General Mills (GIS) Stock price was largely unchanged following its Q3 earnings report after the packaged goods food company reiterated its annual sales and profit forecasts but registered a decline in its key North American segment. The company met revenue expectations, reporting $4.52 billion against estimates of $4.51 billion, while beating EPS consensus with an adjusted $0.86 per share compared to the estimated $0.82. However, management commentary noted that sales volumes remained under pressure despite the company’s focus on innovation and value. Federal Express (FDX) Shares increased by 2.38% after reporting a strong first-quarter performance. The company surpassed analyst estimates on both the top and bottom lines, with revenues of $22.2 billion compared to the $21.7 billion forecast and an adjusted diluted EPS of $3.83 versus the $3.65 estimate. CEO Raj Subramaniam said the freight segment experienced a slight decrease in revenue, the company’s positive financial outcome is credited to its overall operational efficiency and strategic moves. He also said he continues to prioritize structural cost reductions to enhance profitability in a challenging global trade environment. Lennar Corporation (LEN) Stock price fell 4.18% in response to its third-quarter results. The company missed analyst forecasts, reporting revenues of $8.8 billion against estimates of $8.97 billion, and an adjusted EPS of $2.00 against an expected $2.10. Management commentary highlighted the continued softening of the housing market, which they attributed to the pressure of elevated mortgage rates.  Hopefully, the start of Fed cuts might help lower the 10 year bond rate, which is the main driver for mortgage rates. Darden Restaurants (DRI) Shares experienced a positive stock reaction after reporting strong first-quarter sales and earnings. The company’s reported revenues of $3.0 billion and adjusted diluted EPS of $1.97 both topped analyst forecasts. CEO Rick Cardenas attributed the strong performance to the company’s strategy and noted that all casual dining brands saw increased visits from all income groups, but especially from higher-income segments. Parting Thoughts We welcome an opportunity to discuss the above detail and wish you much success in the rest of your week!
